Love can be, as we all know, a strange, wonderful, funny and sometimes cruel thing. In most cases we can’t control who we love or who we fall in love and that can cause us all sorts of heartache. Thankfully for most of us we only have to deal with who we fall in love with and not what we fall in love with.
There are a growing number of people in the world who have a strange syndrome named object sexuality. This syndrome means that they fall in love with random inanimate objects because they actually identify them as a gender, give them a name and have what they believe is a fulfilling and loving relationship with these various objects.
If you look up ‘Object Sexuality’ it is defined as “a pronounced emotional and often romantic desire towards developing significant relationships with particular inanimate objects. Those individuals with this expressed preference may feel strong feelings of attraction, love, and commitment to certain items or structures of their fixation. For some, sexual or even close emotional relationships with humans are incomprehensible. Object-sexual individuals also often believe in animism, and sense reciprocation based on the belief that objects have souls, intelligence, feelings, and are able to communicate.”
Maybe the list below of real people who fell in love with and married inanimate objects will help you feel grateful for the partner you have in your life even if they do occasionally leave the toilet seat up or borrow your razor to shave their legs.
1 – The Woman Who Married a Rollercoaster
Syndromes such as this an actually happen to anyone even good standing members of the community and church organists like Amy Wolfe Weber. Amy is from Pennsylvania and fell in love with and married a 80ft high rollercoaster called 1001 Nachts. She claims that she fell in love with fairground ride when she was only 13 years old and has said: “I was instantly attracted to him sexually and mentally. I wasn’t freaked out, as it just felt so natural, but I didn’t tell anyone about it because I knew it wasn’t ‘normal’ to have feelings for a fairground ride.”
Not one to rush in to marriage Amy made sure she rode the rollercoaster more than 3,000 times before the unlikely pair were married and now she sleeps with a photo of her husband beneath her pillow and another on her bedroom ceiling. She even carries spare nuts and bolts from the ride so that they are always together. Hopefully these are just extra parts and not parts she has stolen from the ride itself.
Amy also claims that her relationship with the rollercoaster leaves her physically fulfilled and spiritually fulfilled. She does not even get jealous when other people ride her husband.
Let us all hope that she only gets physical with the rollercoaster once the fairground closes because something’s you really don’t need to ever see.
2 – The Man Who Married a Steam Engine
Joachim is a man unlike most others. He has a major thing for the inner workings of technical objects, which itself is not that strange, but he has managed to take that thing to a whole other level. Not only does Joachim work as a repairman he is also married to a very pretty steam engine.
Joachim says that he has had many love affairs with mechanical objects over the years and many of his repair jobs have led to physical infidelities but somehow his steam locomotive wife always finds it in her heart to forgive him.
Joachim is keen to point out to people who don’t understand his condition that he, and other people like him, are not just fetishists. He says: “For some people, their car becomes a fetish which they use to put themselves in the limelight. For the objectum-sexual, on the other hand, the car itself — and nothing else — is the desired sexual partner, and all sexual fantasies and emotions are focused on it.”
As you can imagine this man is a man who loves to fix things. While the average man is happy to take sly and sneaky glimpses of women as they walk down the street Joachim finds himself taking sneaky peaks at anything mechanical. He claims that he was first aroused by technical things at the age of 12, he is now over 45.
He claims that he is able to share intimate emotions, feelings and thoughts to his steam train but would never dream of doing so with a real person. He even claims to enjoy getting physical with his train on a regular basis. However that might work!!!
3 – The Woman Who Married the Berlin Wall
Eija-Riitta Berliner-Mauer is a woman whose surname quite literally means Berlin Wall in German. If you are wondering how a person would acquire such a name the answer is that you marry the Berlin Wall itself and that is exactly what this woman did in 1979.
Eija-Riitta Berliner-Mauer claims that she was only 7 years old when she saw the Berlin Wall on television and instantly fell in love with the structure although she refers to the structure as “he”. She had spent most of her life collecting photos of the wall before she finally managed to save up enough money to visit it in person. It was on her sixth visit in 1979 that she finally tied the knot with the famous wall and she did so in front of a handful of guests. Technically she remains a virgin but she insists, even gives detailed descriptions, of how she makes love to the wall and even claims that her relationship with the wall is filled with love, joy and happiness.
You can only begin to imagine this woman’s trauma when in 1989 she witnessed live on television her husband being knocked down. Not only that she got to see David Hasselhoff dancing and singing on top of him. Since her husband was knocked down Eija-Riitta Berliner-Mauer has not revisited the site where her husband once stood and now spends her time collecting models depicting “his” former glory.
During an interview she said “What they did was awful. They mutilated my husband.” In the same interview she also spoke of how she was coping with the loss of her husband and that she was now in love with a small section of garden fencing. She even revealed that the lucky section of garden fence had the pleasure of sharing intimate experiences with her especially when she rubbed herself with small sections of it.
One would have thought walls such as the Great Wall of China would have been the obvious choice for this woman to fall in love rather than a normal piece of garden fence but she said “I find long, slim things with horizontal lines very sexy. The Great Wall of China’s attractive, but he’s too thick – my husband is sexier.”
And that, ladies and gentlemen, pretty much says it all.
4 – The Woman Who Married the Eiffel Tower
When you are reading an article like this and we tell you of a woman named Erika Eiffel you just know that this woman is madly in love with the Eiffel Tower.
Erika says that she has had an insane love for objects dating back as far as she can remember. At first she says that she honestly thought everyone had some sort of connection with objects. It was not until she saw people dating each other while she was in a steady relationship with a bridge that she realised she was different from everyone else.
People who suffer from this syndrome don’t have lives that are all doom and gloom though. Erika’s intense love of objects led her to becoming a world-class archer which helped her win a $250,000 scholarship to the United States Air Force Academy. This was, so she claims, all down to her love and passion for a F-15 fighter jet. The very first time Erika laid eyes on the F-15 jet she said “I’d like to get to know this jet. Kind of like a guy goes to a bar and he sees a really nice-looking girl and he, he wants to go sit next to her, buy her a drink and get to know her more. Well, I kind of felt that way about the F-15.”
Unfortunately for Erika (and the fighter jet of course) this strange syndrome led to her discharge from the Air Force, much ridicule from her peers and total abandonment by her entire family.
It was at this moment, feeling totally humiliated and alone, that she fell in love with the Eiffel Tower. “Her structure is just amazing. You know, she’s got subtle, subtle curves, you know,” that’s how Eiffel describes her wife. Erika Eiffel participated in a commitment ceremony with the Eiffel Tower. “I will tell you that I know love is being reciprocated,” Eiffel said. “I’m happy, I’m not hurting anyone, I’m not hurting myself, I’m not being held back. I love my life.”
5 – The Man Who Married a Photo of Himself
If you are going to have some sort of strange fetish or syndrome then why not have a syndrome that makes you so vain that you must marry a photo of yourself. After all the devil always claims that vanity is his very favourite sin and it is always nice to have a little self-confidence.
As you have probably guessed there is a guy out there who did this very thing and went out and married a photograph of himself. Liu Ye, a 39 year old Chinese man actually married a life sized cut out photo of himself wearing a red bridal gown. The weird wedding took place in the square of Guanzhou Village in front of family, friends and local villagers who were left scratching their heads.
Despite the bride and groom being anything but traditional the ceremony followed ancient Chinese traditions including the bride kowtowing to heaven and earth, each ancestor and to all the elderly people who were aged 90 years or over. The bride and groom even made the traditional rounds of toasting guests during the wedding banquet. We must admit that we are not quite sure how this man managed to get his bride, a life sized cardboard photo, to speak or toast the guests but we are intrigued.
Liu Ye has always denied that he is gay although he does admit that he is a little narcissistic but only a little. Liu Ye said , “marrying myself is a process of deconstructing and reconstructing myself. I make use of the wedding to reconsider opposite-sex marriage. My behaviour seems ridiculous, but I am traditional and conservative in heart so the wedding ceremony is traditional.”
If this is what is traditional and conservative in China then we think we might just scratch that country off our list of holiday destinations.
6 – The Man Who Married A Barbie Doll
If you ever need an excuse for doing something weird then Chang His-hsum, a 46 year old Taiwanese man, might be able to help you out. He married a Barbie doll claiming that he needed to do so in order to appease the restless spirit of his deceased wife.
The wedding ceremony between this man and his 28cm plastic Barbie doll was apparently quite elaborate and expensive. Apparently Chang His-hsum felt that since Barbie was spoilt rotten with her own dream house, private yacht and a variety of other luxuries he was going to have to show her a much better way to live and he did this by having their wedding take place at a Buddhist temple.
Just like in the horror movie Childs Play this man believes that the Barbie doll that he married is actually possessed by the spirit of his late wife who sadly committed suicide more than 20 years ago.
For the wedding ceremony the blushing plastic bride wore a wedding dress with real gold jewellery including a gold necklace and bracelets which had belonged to Tsai. Tsai’s dowry was also included in the ceremony represented by a paper model of a red Mercedes car, it was then burnt so she could use it in the afterlife. 20 years later, how had she been getting around all this time?!
After the wedding, Chang and his new bride returned to their home, together with an urn which contained Tsai’s ashes. He clearly carried her over the threshold.
The urn will be placed at their home and from now on Tsai will be regarded as a member of their family. The groom’s family have asked for Tsai’s forgiveness by giving their blessing to the marriage, thus placating her spirit.
Chang Hsi-hsun said: “I have waited for this day for 20 years. Even after all this time, I feel in love with her. Now I will marry her spirit and take her home. We will be finally together and able to live in peace.”
But before you get all sentimental, Chang did not spend 20 years alone, he remarried after Tsai’s death and this ceremony was carried out with his current wife’s blessing. Yes, current wife. He is still married.
