As we are very well aware there are plenty of conspiracy theories out there covering everything from government cover-ups to celebrity deaths. Most of these conspiracy theories are quickly dismissed as the product of crackpots with overactive imaginations. This is probably very much true for most conspiracy theories but every so often there is conspiracy theory that, regardless how whacky it may sound, turns out to be true.
1 – Anthrax Attack
Back in 2001 there were plenty of conspiracy theories floating around one of which involved a rumour that Al Qaeda was planning an attack upon the United States using the deadly bacterium anthrax. It was in the weeks that followed the September 11 attacks that several media organisations and two Democratic senators received letters that were contaminated with anthrax spores. Five people died and seventeen were infected as a result of coming into contact with the contaminated letters and the FBI named the subsequent investigation Amerithrax investigation.
Due to high tensions between Iraq and Al Qaeda at they were the main focus of the investigation but the FBI eventually concluded that a US bio-defence researcher was behind the attacks. This was discovered shortly after he took his own life in 2008.
2 – Project MKUltra
Anyone who has used the internet in the last ten years will surely be aware that one of the most popular conspiracy theories of our time is a very worrying idea that governments are on a mission to control our minds.
With thanks to work from the Rockefeller Presidential Commission in the United States in 1975 it was revealed that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had actually carried out in-depth research into methods of mind control under the name Project MKUltra. The research took place between 1953 and 1973 with the aim of examining all possible methods of influence and mind control. The research cost the taxpayer many millions of dollars and the findings have never being made public.
Many people argue that the research techniques of Project MKUltra were actually created by the CIA to divert public attention away from the CIA’s real goal of discovering new forms of torture and interrogation.
3 – Operation Snow White
Thanks to celebrities such as Tom Cruise most of us are familiar with the secretive and whacky religion behind the Church of Scientology. What not so many people are aware of is that Operation Snow White was a code name given to a Church of Scientology conspiracy to infiltrate various high level government agencies across the globe in the 1970’s.
The church’s leaders and high level members had the intention of targeting the FBI, the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) and the CIA with the hope they could gain information that would be useful to the religious organisation. No one is certain as to how long the scheme had being going on but when it was discovered by government officials it led to a number of church members being arrested and pleading guilty to a variety of criminal offences.
4 – Operation Ajax
It is not uncommon for Western governments to be accused with meddling in the affairs of developing nations with the aim of protecting their own political and commercial interests. A little project known as Project Ajax was orchestrated by the United States and Great Britain in 1953 was carried out in order to overthrow the Iranian government and it’s Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddeq.
Kermit Roosevelt, an undercover CIA agent, was responsible for bribing officials of the Iranian government in order to facilitate action against Mosaddeq. The reason behind the Western interference and need to overthrow Mosaddeq was a direct result of his plans to nationalise the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company and to deny BP (British Petroleum) a monopoly over Iranian oil fields.
5 – The Holocaust
Without any shadow of doubt the Holocaust is the greatest tragedy in mankind’s history. It is an everlasting symbol of man’s inhumanity to man. The first whispers during World War 2 of Nazi concentration camps and their systematic slaughter of six million Jews were dismissed as nothing more than a rumour. This may have being because for most people they lacked the ability to comprehend the levels of cruelty and brutality involved.
It was not until the death camps were discovered at the end of World War 2 that the true horror of what Nazis called the “final solution” became clear. It was discovered that the Nazis used many horrendous methods to carry out their macabre plan with poisonous gas asphyxiation, shooting, hanging, beating, starvation and forced labour being the most popular.
6 – Operation Infecktion
During the Cold War information was considered to be as powerful a weapon as the atom bomb. Operation Infecktion was a KGB attempt to spread false and misleading information stating that the United States government had manufactured the AIDS virus. The hope of the KGB was to destabilise America’s relationship with its allies and it planned to do this by promoting the idea that the virus was the result of a research project into biological weapons at Fort Detrick in Maryland.
It is thought that Operation Infektion was also used to try and cover up the Soviet Union’s own attempts to develop and manufacture its own biological weapons.
7 – The Swiss Files Scandal
The Swiss Files Scandal was yet another conspiracy that focused on the idea and fear that democratic governments are out to control us by establishing surveillance societies.
During 1989 in Switzerland the country was shocked to learn that the country’s federal police were involved in developing an illegal mass surveillance system. It emerged that the authority had actually created over 900,000 files all of which contained personal information on the citizens of Switzerland.
It was also discovered that the Swiss defence department had secretly compiled a huge number of secret files on citizens and that a secret paramilitary force known as P-26 had also been created.
8 – The CIA and the Coup Against Salvador Allende
The United States backed coup against Salvador Allende, the democratically elected socialist President of Chile, took place against the background of the Cold War. The coup in 1973 paved the way for the brutal regime of General Augusto Pinochet. American participation has been confirmed by numerous testimonies from former members of the CIA and special clandestine army forces. The United States helped fund and plan operations and military assaults designed to destabilise Allende’s presidency and foster a coup.
